Sightseeing on the North Shore

Marblehead
Home to some of Caren’s family, Marblehead is a picturesque, historic town on the water, known as the "birthplace of the American Navy." Come for a day of shopping, ocean views, and quaint, narrow streets. You can visit historic sites like Old Burial Hill, Fort Sewall, Old Powder House, Abbot Hall, and the Jeremiah Lee Mansion.

           Rockport
This town features miles of lovely beaches, boulder-strewn paths through woods and glades, and that uncommonly magical light that has inspired painters since Winslow Homer. Shopping, dining, and arts abound. The beaches offer perhaps the most scenic stretch of New England shore: Front Beach and Back Beach are both on Sandy Bay in the center of Rockport. Old Garden Beach is more secluded and more popular with locals. Halibut Point State Park is a romantic destination as well.

Manchester-by-the-Sea
This town epitomizes small town, New England charm. It used to be called "Manchester," but back in 1990 the state legislature voted to officially change it to "Manchester-by-the-Sea". Now you should have no doubt what is BY Manchester. In addition to beautiful beaches, visitors are attracted to the quaint shops, fine dining, and historic buildings. You can rent bikes from Seaside Cycle or enjoy ice cream at Captain Dusty’s. Visit the beautiful Singing Beach, which is named for the squeaky sound the sand makes when you walk on it. Enjoy the soft sand and stunning view, complete with mansions overlooking the water.

           Ipswitch
Buffering the grounds of the Crane family mansion from the ocean, Crane Beach is a 4.5 mile barrier beach offering the classic New England coastal scene with typical North Shore attractions- a wide stretch of white sand and cold, calm water popular with families. You can also check out Appleton Farms, with a beautiful walking trail, or rent canoes from Foote Brothers.

Gloucester
Cape Ann is known as the whale watching capital of the world, and several of the companies operate out of this town. Also check out the wide, soft-sanded Wingaersheek Beach which is very popular with families because the surf is always calm and the water is a bit warmer than at other North Shore beaches. The best parts? The salt marshes, rocks to climb over, and fascinating tide pools.
