Caren & Eric Wedding Info

Sightseeing in Salem

The wedding was on Massachusetts' North Shore in Salem, a 45 minute drive north of Boston.

Salem Maritime National Historic Site
Here is the very first National Historic Site designated by Congress. Visit and recall ye olde days past, when this was a world famous bustling seaport. The park includes a lighthouse, the Custom House, the merchant ship The Friendship, and historic buildings the Derby House (home of Elias Derby) and Narbonne House. Other buildings, including the West India Goods Store, the Scale House, and the Rigging Shed, are open to the public.

House of Seven Gables
Have you read any Nathanial Hawthorne recently? See the house that inspired the novel. Originally home to Hawthorne’s cousin, the house includes furniture described in his writings and a requisite secret staircase (perhaps with ties to the Underground Railroad?). A fascinating place to visit.

Salem Witch Museum
What's that? Something related to witches happened in Salem? One of the better of the macabre witch museums, this one starts with a creepy audiovisual presentation to evoke the terror and hysteria of the dark days of 1692. There is also a thoughtful exhibit that considers the larger role that scapegoating has played throughout American history.
